Oh, how lack of urgency affects the intensity of my studies! Not faced with any impending doom (such as a test of my knowledge of Italian language for example), I'm almost back to my lackadaisical attitude to language learning: I look at some stuff in Italian, and I listen, and I even bother to repeat. But the fear necessary for peak performance just isn't there! I even went as far as to order from the library something called Relax and learn. Italian: a laid-back approach to language learning. After reading several books about learning a foreign language, not to mention Benny, telling me very specifically that it's not a very relaxed kind of activity. It's not even supposed to be!
Losing focus there a bit. I would like to avoid another plateau without having to sign up for another test in December, especially that I still don't know how I did at the last one! Definitely gotta step on it. I will produce a detailed plan soon. I have to do some research and investigate the issue first.

The Beauty of Standardized Testing in Italian Context
For the last few months I'd been inflicting a curious experiment on myself. Annoyed at the lack of results in my to-date language learning - tangible results, not just pride and satisfaction - I decided to put myself to the test. It was an actual test in fact. I decided to attempt a CILS exam, which is a standardized test given to foreigners studying Italian. I passed something similar years ago in German (Goethe Institute) and in English (TOEFL), when I needed to prove to the friendly and oh-so-welcoming Canadians that despite a foreign Master's degree, I will be able to benefit from their higher education also.
I've been questioning the validity of such tests ever since - if only because German leaked out of my life almost to nothing despite the piece of paper saying I know 99,7% of it (that makes me wonder what level that was since I got such score...), and English took 2 more years to really seep into it after I got another quite high result in the interestingly speechless TOEFL.
My attempt at CILS level B1 (level which I self-established of course) was done after almost no outside instruction and about 5 months of self-instruction. Aside from the doubtful pleasure and usefulness of a conversation class I mentioned here at some point, I received no instruction of a classroom character. I did benefit from various materials provided by Ewcia, but I have yet to say a word in Italian to that patient woman. Who, by the way, is not insisting and allows me to do things as slowly and as "cagingly" as I please.
Preparing for it was easy enough - I just decided to finally put to use all those countless textbooks, grammar books, language courses on CDs and in MP3 format, and thematic dictionaries that have been weighing down my bookshelves so much over the years that recently I had to move them to the bottom. I have to say that I actually used most of the stuff I accumulated over the years.
Pimsleur Complete Italian course was my main source of audio/speaking exercises. I started at level IIA, went on to IIB, IIIA and finally almost finished IIIB right before the exam. For grammar the best source I found was Italian Grammar Drills by Paola Nanni-Tate. The explanations were most consistent and the abundance of exercises really gave me not just the illusion of, but real confidence this time. Interestingly, I found the Italian Verb Drills by the same author quite useless - the type of exercises there taught me the verbs I wanted to learn but mostly out of context. I was still at a loss trying to use them in a sentence. I also used Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Italian Grammar by professor Marcel Danesi but among other things, I found its treatment of prepositions lacking in many ways. I decided that even a phrasebook isn't stooping too low, so I went with the Lonely Planet Italian phrasebook that gave me a nice smattering of phrases that were quite useful and again gave me the feeling that I was learning something that can actually be used in real life. Michel Thomas Italian audio course played a big part too - especially at the crucial moment when I was making up my mind whether I will ever actually say one word in that language. Michel Thomas gave me the courage.
It will take 3 months before I know if I passed the test. I think I may have - if listening comprehension didn't kill me. Most importantly though, as part of the test, I spoke to a person in Italian! It was my first time. I can imagine less stressful first attempts at speaking but somehow the planets did not align and I didn't manage it before the test.
Now the plan is to take it easy and keep plowing along. It's just that now instead of trying to learn everything at once, if only just a little, I will do it methodically and systematically and with slow delight. I gave myself a few days off but it's time to get back on that horse.
Especially since soon I'm adding German to the mix... At least with German there will be no fear of confusing the two, will there?

Condizionale cz. 1.
Tryb przypuszczający condizionale używany jest, kiedy mówimy o czynnościach rzeczywistych, których realizacja podlega warunkowi.
Condizionale ma dwie formy - presente (niedokonaną) i passato (dokonaną).
Parlerei con lui, ma non ho tempo. - Porozmawiałbym z nim, ale nie mam czasu.
Avrei parlato con lui, ma non avevo tempo. - Byłbym z nim porozmawiał, ale nie miałem czasu.
Parlerei con lui, se potessi. - Porozmawiałbym z nim, gdybym mógł.
Avrei parlato con lui se avessi potuto. - Byłbym z nim porozmawiał, gdybym (był) mógł.
Czynność wyrażona w condizionale presente odnosi się do teraźniejszości lub przyszłości - jej realizacja jest możliwa.
Czynność opisana w condizionale passato odnosi sie do przeszłości. Warunek jej realizacji może być wyrażony w congiuntivo, indicativo (trybie oznajmującym) lub condizionale. Jako, że spełnienie warunku nie jest już możliwe, zamierzona czynność nie może zostać wykonana.

Imperatywny imperativo
Exercise number one - however painful that was.
POSIZIONATI sulla linea di tiro con le gambe leggermente divaricate, BILANCIA il peso e ALLINEA le punte dei piedi con il bersaglio. Con tre dita, una sopra e due sotto la cocca, AGGANCIA la corda e FA’ una leggera tensione per posizionarla in modo sicuro. APPOGGIA il palmo della mano sull'impugnatura dell'arco e sempre con leggera tensione LASCIA che la mano si posizioni nell'impugnatura. SOLLEVA l'arco fino all'altezza delle spalle e parallelo al terreno. RUOTA il polso ed il gomito dell'arco per permettere alla corda di chiudersi senza interferire con il braccio. TENDI l'arco con un movimento lineare chiudendo le scapole e rimanendo il piu possibile allineati con il bersaglio. CONTROLLA i punti di contatto della corda nel centro del naso e di lato alla bocca, e la mano che tocca il mento. CONTROLLA il mirino sul giallo e la corda sul lato della diottra. RILASCIA la corda aprendo le dita lasciando che la mano si rilassi e MANTIENI il braccio dell'arco allineato fino alla fine del volo della freccia.
POSIZIONATI sulla linea di tiro con le gambe leggermente divaricate, BILANCIA il peso e ALLINEA le punte dei piedi con il bersaglio. Imperativo - Penne con carciofi

Nastepne cwiczenie na Imperativo: zamien wyroznione bezokoliczniki na tryb rozkazujacy w II os. liczby pojedynczej.
Penne con carciofi
Tempo di cottura: 30 minuti
Tempo di preparazione: 15 minuti
Difficolta': Facile
Porzioni: 4
Ingredienti:
320 g di penne
4 carciofi
200 g di salsiccia
1 cipolla
mezzo bicchiere di vino bianco secco
1 mestolo di brodo
parmigiano grattugiato
olio d’oliva
sale
pepe
Preparazione:
PULIRE i carciofi, eliminando le foglie esterne piu dure e spuntare le restanti. TAGLIARE ogni cuore di carciofo a meta ed ELIMINARE il fieno, se presente, asportandolo con un cucchiaino.
METTERLI subito in acqua acidulata con succo di limone per evitare che anneriscano.
MONDARE la cipolla e TRITARLA finemente. In una padella FAR scaldare tre cucchiai d’olio e SOFFRIGGERE la cipolla a fuoco basso poi AGGIUNGERE i carciofi tagliati a fettine e LASCIAR insaporire.
PELARE e SBRICIOLARE la salsiccia e SOFFRIGGERLA a parte in una padella antiaderente, SCOLARE il grasso in eccesso e UNIRE la polpa di salsiccia ai carciofi. IRRORARE con il vino bianco, FAR sfumare un minuto e UNIRE il brodo caldo.
REGOLARE di sale e LASCIAR stufare per 10 minuti.
PORTARE a ebollizione dell’acqua salata in cui FAR cuocere le penne, SCOLARLE ancora al dente e TRASFERIRLE nella padella. MANTECARE le penne con un po’ dell’acqua di cottura, UNIRE il formaggio grattugiato e del pepe macinato al momento. SERVIRE immediatamente.

Penne con carciofi
Tempo di cottura: 30 minuti
Tempo di preparazione: 15 minuti
Difficolta': Facile
Porzioni: 4
Ingredienti:
320 g di penne
4 carciofi
200 g di salsiccia
1 cipolla
mezzo bicchiere di vino bianco secco
1 mestolo di brodo
parmigiano grattugiato
olio d’oliva
sale
pepe
Preparazione:
PULIRE i carciofi, eliminando le foglie esterne piu dure e spuntare le restanti. TAGLIARE ogni cuore di carciofo a meta ed ELIMINARE il fieno, se presente, asportandolo con un cucchiaino.
METTERLI subito in acqua acidulata con succo di limone per evitare che anneriscano.
MONDARE la cipolla e TRITARLA finemente. In una padella FAR scaldare tre cucchiai d’olio e SOFFRIGGERE la cipolla a fuoco basso poi AGGIUNGERE i carciofi tagliati a fettine e LASCIAR insaporire.
PELARE e SBRICIOLARE la salsiccia e SOFFRIGGERLA a parte in una padella antiaderente, SCOLARE il grasso in eccesso e UNIRE la polpa di salsiccia ai carciofi. IRRORARE con il vino bianco, FAR sfumare un minuto e UNIRE il brodo caldo.
REGOLARE di sale e LASCIAR stufare per 10 minuti.
PORTARE a ebollizione dell’acqua salata in cui FAR cuocere le penne, SCOLARLE ancora al dente e TRASFERIRLE nella padella. MANTECARE le penne con un po’ dell’acqua di cottura, UNIRE il formaggio grattugiato e del pepe macinato al momento. SERVIRE immediatamente.

The Neffa Attempt
OMG! This one was difficult. So part of the exercise from a previous post was to fill in the blanks lyrics of a song in lovely italiano. This is a nice reminiscenza from the old days when Ewa was teaching me English. It was in the pre-computer era for us, so this poor woman would transcribe by hand lyrics to songs that we liked, with some words missing. I was supposed to do some nifty listening comprehension and hear them in a performed song - and fill in the blanks. We called it "słuchanki". Good times, however frustrating the exercise. But that's how I learned assorted lyrics to Michael Jackson's oeuvre and half-memorized Loreena McKennitt song book.
So now we're moving it all to Italian. Like I said, difficult. Below what I managed - the words in blue are the ones I found by myself; the ones in pink I had to look up, after many unsuccessful attempts to divine what they were. Gained a new respect for Neffa in the meantime - he looks quite bad-ass for somebody who's got such sweet and gentle songs!

Imperativo - tryb rozkazujący
W języku włoskim trybu rozkazującego używa się nie tylko do wydawania poleceń, ale i do wyrażania rad, życzeń i próśb:
Venga domani - Proszę przyjść jutro.
Scusi - Przepraszam Pana/Panią.
Sii felice - Bądź szczęśliwy.
Accomodati - Rozgość się.
Formy trybu rozkazującego tworzy się, przez dodanie do tematu bezokolicznika końcówek:
I. -, a, i, iamo, ate, ino
II. -, i, a, iamo, ete, ano
III. -, (isc)i, (isc)a, iamo, ite (isc)ano
Np.:
parla, parli, parliamo, parlate, parlino
prendi, prenda, prendiamo, prendete, prendano
apri, apra, apriamo, aprite, aprano
finisci, finisca, finiamo, finite, finiscano
Istnieją oczywiście czasowniki, tworzące imperativo w sposób nieregularny :) Np.:

POSIZIONARSI sulla linea di tiro con le gambe leggermente divaricate, BILANCIARE il peso e ALLINEARE le punte dei piedi con il bersaglio.
Con tre dita, una sopra e due sotto la cocca, AGGANCIARE la corda e FARE una leggera tensione per posizionarla in modo sicuro.
APPOGGIARE il palmo della mano sull'impugnatura dell'arco e sempre con leggera tensione LASCIARE che la mano si posizioni nell'impugnatura.
SOLLEVARE l'arco fino all'altezza delle spalle e parallelo al terreno. RUOTARE il polso ed il gomito dell'arco per permettere alla corda di chiudersi senza interferire con il braccio.
TENDERE l'arco con un movimento lineare chiudendo le scapole e rimanendo il piu possibile allineati con il bersaglio.
CONTROLLARE i punti di contatto della corda nel centro del naso e di lato alla bocca, e la mano che tocca il mento.
CONTROLLARE il mirino sul giallo e la corda sul lato della diottra.
RILASCIARE la corda aprendo le dita lasciando che la mano si rilassi e MANTENERE il braccio dell'arco allineato fino alla fine del volo della freccia.

What I know, however little
It's time to take stock. Yeah. It's been some time since I restarted this little Italian project and the state of my knowledge is much less impressive than I was hoping it would be. Yet again, I read a lot ABOUT learning a language, while neglecting the actual studying. (It reminds me of the time when I imagined I would become a writer, and I immediately started spending a lot of time reading books ABOUT becoming one, instead of planting butt in chair and actually write.) One of the more pleasant pieces was Language Hacking Guide by Benny Lewis of Fluent in 3 Months - a self-taught polyglot who makes language learning look quite accomplish-able, even though his method requires some serious internal barrier breaking as it focuses on going out there and speaking to natives.
I have very high capacity for suspension of disbelief though (when it comes to most things except for religion), allora I am totally willing to fully believe that this time indeed will be different; that this time I will actually reach some level of fluency that will be established and proved by passing some kind of official certification exam. Yes!
Let's get back to taking stock though. I'm planning to report on what kind of Italian language knowledge I possess. I have a feeling the report will be short and by no means sweet, as it will just remind me how little it is compared to how much it was going to be. Damn! Let's get it out of the way then, so that I can start adding to it.
Since this time I wanted to start speaking right away, I started with audio courses. Not Pimsleur or Barrons or anything else that I have on my computer, but Michel Thomas' Italian Fundamentals. I've used Michel Thomas successfully with French only a few months ago and I was quite pleased with the results, despite Thomas's Polish accent, occasional language incongruities and a bit annoying way of speaking. The method of adding to the language little by little, immediately building on words and structures acquired just a moment ago, worked for me quite nicely. So I am doing the same thing with Italian now. Here are some sentences Thomas teaches already in the introductory course:
- I want to buy the same thing.
- I don't want to buy the same thing.
- Why don't you want to buy something here?
- I want to know how much it is because I want to buy it.
- I want to buy it if it's not very expensive.
- You can have it now if you want.
- I'm sorry but it is not acceptable for me this way.
- I want to know why it is not acceptable for you this way because it is very good.
- How long are you staying?
- I want to see you a little later.
- Why don't you want to speak Italian with me?
- I'm sorry but I can't speak with you right now because I'm very busy.
- Do you want to eat something now?
- I'm tired and I am staying home tonight.
- I'm on my way to buy it.
Seems all over the place, right? Well, for me it was a relatively painless way to learn to say moderately complex sentences that would make me feel good about myself. And it did not take long at all. So now I can say all these things about buying things and doing it now, and being busy, and about things being unacceptable. Fun, no? Also, since I don't want to listen to Michel Thomas any more than I have to, I downloaded Anki application (another thing discovered thanks to Benny Lewis), which happens to have his courses in a form of flashcards.
So this is more or less what I know how to say. Aside from that I've been looking again at my Italian textbooks of all sorts and this is what I managed to learn:
- Introductions and greetings (gah - hate this introductory stuff!)
- The definite vs. indefinite article
- Gender
- Numbers (however reluctantly)
- Telling time (seriously, not planning to use it EVAH!)
- Weather (see above)
- I giorni della settimana
- I mesi dell'anno
- -are verbs in present tense
- Family members
- Demonstrative adjectives
- Possession
- Giving directions (if my life depended on it)
- Possessive adjectives (and let it be immortalized for posterity that I even know that when the possessive adjective is used with sing. and unmodified nouns referring to family members, the article is dropped. It's only put back if the noun is plural and/or modified. Gawd, I'm so knowledgeable!)
I'm pretty sure I may know some other things. I understand quite a bit of the lyrics to Italian songs I listen to obsessively. I understand about 40% of the Italian news program on OMNI in Toronto, but that may be just because I'm familiar with the topics already. But it's all unsystematic and all over the place. I need to know what I know so that I can add to it.
I'm planning to report here on any newly acquired Italian knowledge. That way at least I'll keep track - and if I happen to forget something, it will be easy to establish what. And deal with it.
